If you run vista 64-bit don't buy these Dec 27, 2008 I also made the mistake of buying these for our sons before realizing that Mattel hasn't made them compatible with either Vista or Mac. That is a serious glitch, I would say. If you call the 800 number that shows up when you try to install you can ask for a voucher, and hopefully when they get their act together you'll be able to buy the upgraded ones at no extra cost. Look into it.
Buyer Beware!! Dec 22, 2008 I would love to be able to review this product, however, the powers that be at Mattel have decided that the toys will only work on a Windows/PC based computer, NOT A MAC!
My 7 year old was extremely disappointed! He was so excited to play with these things, only be let down by the fact that they WON'T WORK ON OUR MAC!!!!
If I could give Zero stars, I would!
Loads of fun for kids 5 and up (including 20 somethings ;) Dec 12, 2008 My nephew is really into UB Funkeys, so I bought this kit to "speak his language." I thought it would be a really juvenile game in which I would spend an hour just as research to see eye to eye. Five hours later, and I find myself wanting to collect the Funkeys with him! The game combines the best of exploration games, discovering new worlds, and anti-boredom mini-games.
Within the Funkeys world, there are different realms unlocked by each Funkey set of characters (i.e. Dream State unlocks either Daydream Oasis or Nightmare Rift, depending on the character). Each Funkey character unlocks a new game. My favorite games so far are Funkey Jong and the Pyramid matching game unlocked by Ptep (also a Dream State Character). With this starter kit, you get Drift (a Dream State Funkey) and Bones (one of the originals), so you get access to multiple worlds right off the bat.
You need the started kit for the software (which is loaded onto your computer, so no entering the cd-rom every time) and for the USB hub where you place your different Funkeys. After you get the kit, though, each character is around 5 bucks, so it's super inexpensive. And the characters are cute, some a little Tokyo Pop, others a little emo, and some very action-figure-esque.
The software was very easy to load, and while the software updates, it allows you to play games (so no staring at a progress bar). The one downside is that it is only PC compatible (sorry Mac kids). While this game is made for kids, there are a lot of cheeky inside jokes for adults.
Overall, this game is a lot more complex than I expected, and is great for kids ages 5 though senior citizen (some parents may find Nightmare Rift a little scary for kids younger than 5, even if they are computer savvy, so you may want to stick with the more "bubblegum" Funkeys). If you haven't bought a starter kit yet, this one is a great value, bringing you multiple worlds in one package.
A Fun Computer toy that is inexpensive and keeps growing Nov 12, 2008 This is a great toy that is not expensive to get involved with. Every additional character adds a new dimension to the story and adds a new game. Special notes: needs Highspeed Internet access for updates. Works well with XP & Vista.
Support line is very helpful. A good investment. Mom's and Dad's will like to play too!
Problem Toy Nov 10, 2008 The toy has never worked liked we thought it should have. Probably should have returned it. Constantly getting error messages. For a 10 year old boy this game was too simple.
